While a fishing hook, rod and reel all play an important part in helping to catch a fish, perhaps the most important thing between a fisherman and the fish is the fishing line. Fishing lines come in a variety of colors, weights and materials and are often accompanied with a high price tag. DiscountFishingLine believes that fishing should be accessible to people of all ages, regardless of income, which is why we offer a large selection of quality fishing lines and gear at a price everyone can afford.

While all fishing lines may look the same to the untrained eye, each line is different and serves a specific purpose. Fishing lines fall into three basic categories: monofilament fishing lines, braided fishing lines and fluorocarbon fishing lines. Monofilament lines are by far the most popular choice among fishermen and account for more than 66% of all fishing lines that are sold. Created by DuPont® in the late 1930s, monofilament fishing lines are thin lines that are made from a single fiber. Many fishers prefer monofilament lines because they are more flexible than other lines, which makes them able to handle the weight and struggle of larger fish. However, monofilament lines are not used for fishing in deep waters because as the length of line stays under water it begins to absorb the water which will cause the knots to loosen over time.

Before monofilament fishing lines, the majority of fishers used braided fishing lines which are made by weaving fibers together to form a single strand. Braided fishing lines are known for being strong, which makes them a common choice among fishers looking to catch larger fish. However, braided fishing lines do have a few drawbacks, perhaps the most major of which is the fact that braided fishing lines are thicker than most other lines, which makes them more visible in water and can often scare the fish away.

The fluorocarbon line was first developed in Japan but has grown to be used by fishermen from around the world. Used primarily for saltwater fishing and fly fishing the fluorocarbon fishing line is nearly invisible in water and does not absorb water like monofilament and braided fishing lines. Because they do not absorb water, fluorocarbon fishing lines are less likely to weaken and stretch compared to other fishing lines.

Price shouldn’t come into play when it comes to choosing the fishing line that is right for you. DiscountFishingLine wants every fisher to be able to fish using quality fishing line. For this reason, DiscountFishingLine is full of affordable fishing line, reels, rods and other fishing gear for people of all budgets.
